Region urges UK Government to select HyNet as first hydrogen network

A collective of over 40 organisations have sent a letter to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP, urging the Government to select HyNet as the country’s first regional hydrogen network.

HyNet’s hydrogen network has the potential to span two countries and four strategic authorities, serving millions of people. Over 40 companies, employing over 9,000 people across nine sectors, are seeking to connect to HyNet, to give themselves a competitive edge in the global market for low carbon-products, and to deliver the Government’s Clean Power 2030 Mission.

The open letter highlights the hydrogen demonstrations which have already taken place – in sectors from glass manufacturing to aluminium recycling – which give North West manufacturers a head-start in switching to low-carbon production.

Skills and supply chain initiatives which make the region ready to deliver are also emphasised, such as the recent Office for Clean Energy Jobs Regional Skills Pilot and the upcoming HyNet Supply Chain Summit.

Building on the success of HyNet’s carbon capture system, the hydrogen side of HyNet offers a mature, flexible project, which in a single decision, can enable Government to deliver its strategic priorities across climate change, economic growth and industrial strategy.

With the breadth of support calling for HyNet’s hydrogen system to advance, we look forward to working with Government to deliver on the region’s ambitions.
