The last month has seen the culmination of busy behind the scenes activity to kick off Phase 1 of the full HyNet programme. Bringing together major North West based organisations, bids have been submitted for two pots of government funding to start research and development work, and a third is in the works.
Carbon Capture & Storage
A priority for HyNet in Phase 1 is making progress on developing plans for the Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage opportunity at Liverpool Bay. The North West offers the most practical and low cost option for CCUS in the UK; and it’s a vital part of the HyNet picture.
Cadent, Progressive Energy, Peel [Environmental] and other partners have just submitted a bid for government funding to start early work on shaping the ‘NW CCUS cluster’. The UK Government CCUS Innovation fund is a £15million pot offering grants of up to £7m for world-leading innovation and research into CCUS technology. Phase 1 also includes delving deeper into how the hydrogen supply for HyNet would be delivered. Progressive Energy are leading a further partnership bid under HyNet for support from the government’s Hydrogen Supply Competition. Further similar funding avenues which can support this element of HyNet Phase 1 are also being explored.
Leading the innovation charge in the North West
The various funds are available as part of the Government’s push for clean energy innovation. Inspiring industry to collaborate and bring forward new solutions can inspire an economic boost for the UK as well as meet the CO2 emissions reductions needed by 2050 to meet the requirements of the 2008 Climate Change Act. The announcement on successful bids will be made by Government early in 2019.
For HyNet, these areas of early work will provide detailed costs and delivery evidence on the full project; vital to inform the full engineering design work expected in the early 2020s.
The final part of the Phase 1 picture is exploring the tantalising prospects of hydrogen transport offered in the North West. More on this soon…
